Manchester Art Gallery is thrilled to announce we have been accredited as a Gallery of Sanctuary by the national organisation City of Sanctuary!
This award is in recognition the Gallery’s work and ongoing commitment to be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution. The Accreditation Panel looked very carefully at everything we do that supports refugees and people seeking safety in Manchester. During the assessment, we talked about the amazing work including; Visitors Services’ beautiful welcome, the work of the anti-racism group and connecting with the events team and the café to create Families of the World dishes and serve a weekly cultural appropriate menu to our families. They were also interested in exhibitions (Uncertain Futures, Rethinking the Grand Tour), Collection review and our journey to become a trauma-informed museum and volunteering.
We join other cultural organisations in gaining this award, including the Whitworth, Manchester Museum and the People’s History Museum.
Manchester City Council are working towards becoming a City of Sanctuary.
