Spiral with Red
Dame Barbara Hepworth 1903 - 1975
Summary
An abstract drawing in pencil of rhythmic arcs contained within a curved eye form on a pink crayon background. Curved lines interlock, overlap, and spiral round each other. The inner parabolic curves form two circles. The left circle is dissected by a diagonal pencil line. It contains two fans of pencil lines suggesting a spiralled string form. There is a mauve triangular form just below the centre. Other areas are coloured white with much of the right circle form coloured grey. Barbara Hepworth did not consider her drawings as preparatory studies for her sculptures. Instead they relate to colour and form and convey the qualities of her three dimensional workt.
