Summary
Maria Countess Waldegrave (1739-1807) was the illegitimate daughter of Sir Edward Walpole and Dorothy Paxton. She married James, 2nd Earl Waldegrave, in 1759 who died shortly after in 1763. She later married William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (brother of George III), in 1766, becoming Duchess of Gloucester. George III was much displeased and sent them abroard. The marriage was not published until 1772 soon after which the brothers were reconciled. This is one of a series of 38 prints McArdell produced after paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds of which Reynolds remarked "By this man I shall be immortalised".
