Dessert Plate
Summary
Public: Plate with pierced rim, brown earthenware, painted in coloured slips, overglaze enamels and gilding with a young girl a stream in a loosely Japanese inspired Aesthetic Movement style. Private: Circular plate with pierced rim painted in areas with coloured slips with some fine outlining in purple overglaze enamel. Powdered with gilt and with outline gilt cloud like motifs with showers of dots underneath. To the left of the plate a turqouoise, green leafed plant with a trail of pink brown bell like flowers loosely detailed and outlined in gilt. Central rectangular panel placed over part of a circular panel, on the upper right centre of the plate. The circular panel has a fancifully treated scene of dark starry sky, grey rocks, blue sea, and a brown beach with a shell and a starfish all loosely outlined in gilt. Main panel depicts a country scene with a fair haired girl wearing a Chinese hat, and short pale brown dress with short puffed sleeves. She holds a bunch of three narcissi, and stands beneath a fruit tree on the banks of a stream. Fine outlining picked out with purple overglaze enamel. Panel set within a pale blue and gilded border.
