Summary
Standing figure of lady in wooded background her left arm leaning on a stone slab. Her left leg is crossed over her right . She wears a simple dress with a cloak trimmed with ermine over the top. She has a richly patterned tie belt. On her head an elaborate turban, possibly of similar material to the belt, and topped with feathers. Rich material is draped over the pillar to the right. Mary Isabella Manners, Duchess of Rutland (1756-1831), was a politician and society hostess, married to Charles Manners, Marquess of Granby (later 4th Duke of Rutland). Published by subscription by Valentine Green in London on 1 July 1780 as part of his series 'Beauties of the Present Age' from the portrait paintings of high-born women by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Green sold them for 15 shillings a print or 12 shillings to subscribers.
