Thomas Tomkins
Summary
Thomas Tomkins (1743-1816) ran a writing school in Foster Lane, London, at the address recorded in this print. He was author of 'The Beauties of Writing' 1777 and 'New Alphabets' 1779. He was also a well known calligrapher and taught the art of letter writing. He wrote the copy of the addresses composed by Sir Joshua Reynolds to the King and Queen in 1789 for which he was paid 50 guineas. He was a close friend of both Reynolds and Dr. Johnson. The painting from which this print is after was the last painting by Reynolds before his death.
