Seated Youth
Summary
Nude sculpture of seated young man with head turned to his right and shawl over shoulders. This figure derives from one of the figures of nude youths (ignudi) frescoed by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Rome. The figure is identical to one serving as an andiron or firedog on a grate designed by Hoole and Company, of Sheffield, ironfounders. Stevens worked as chief designer for Hooles from 1850-1857 and designed this firedog c.1852-3. A plaster model for it is in the V&A, London: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O312719/seated-male-figure-panel-alfred-stevens/
