Summary
The poet Rev. William Mason (1724-1797) was the son of a Yorkshire clergyman. He was a friend and biographer of poet and professor Thomas Gray. He entered the Church in 1754 and obtained the rectory of Aston near Rotherham in Yorkshire, where he died in 1797 from an injury to his leg received whilst getting out of his carriage. He was the author of many poems and plays, a distinguished musician, gardener and a friend and correspondent of Sir Robert Walpole and most of the eminent literary persons of his time. He was also a friend of artist Sir Joshua Reynolds. It was Revd William Mason who recommended printmaker William Doughty to Reynolds.
