Summary
Seated lady in profile turning her head to the observer. She is dressed simply, with a drape over her knee. She holds her baby daughter with outstretched arms. The baby likewise holds her arms out to her mosther and has one leg on the Duchess's knee. There is a landscape background to the right of the Duchess, behind the baby. Caroline was born in 1743, the only daughter of John, 4th Duke of Bedford and one of the train-bearers at Queen Charlotte's coronation. In 1762 she married George, 3rd Duke of Marlborough. She died at Blenheim in 1811. Her daughter, Lady Caroline Spencer, was born in 1763 and married Henry Welbore, 2nd Viscount Clifden in 1792. She also died at Blenheim in 1813.
