Sir Joshua Reynolds (after) 1723 - 1792
Summary
A portrait of architect Sir William Chambers (1723-1796). His architectural achievement, Somerset House on the Strand in London, can be seen in the background. Neo-classical in style, it was built to house government offices as well as various learned societies including the Royal Academy. Chambers was a founding member of the Royal Academy alongside his close friend, artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, and the Academy's first Professor of Architecture. He was official architect to King George III from 1760 onwards. He is portrayed holding a pencil in his right hand while his left hand rests on a pile of white paper.
