Mrs Pelham
Sir Joshua Reynolds (after) 1723 - 1792
Summary
Portrait of Sophie Pelham, the 1st Baroness of Yarborough, after Reynolds. She wears a workingclass–inspired yet finely embroidered Brunswick dress to feed her chickens in front of a rustic farmhouse. There was an 18th-century British fashion for ornamental farms and dairies within elite society. Mrs. Pelham had her own ornamental dairy, built in 1779 and fitted out entirely in Wedgwood Queen’s Ware dishes and equipment.
