Frances Anne Greville and her Brother
Sir Joshua Reynolds (after) 1723 - 1792
Summary
Frances Anne Greville (1748-1818) was the only daughter of Fulke Greville (1717-1806), an MP and envoy to the Elector of Bavaria and author of 'Maxims, Characters Reflections' in 1756. Her mother was the Irish poet Frances Greville. She had six brothers, the one represented being probably William Fulke Greville (1751-1837) who grew up to be a captain in the navy. They pose with Frances as Psyche, a princess loved by Cupid, and her brother as Cupid. It is said that her father, in consequence of a quarrel with his son, had him painted out of this picture and a tripod placed there instead. Frances Anne married John Crewe in 1776 (who was later created Lord Crewe in 1806). She was a brilliant leader of fashion, and a political supporter of Edmund Burke, Charles James Fox and Richard Sheridan.
