Emma Hart, later Lady Hamilton, as a Bacchante
Sir Joshua Reynolds (after) 1723 - 1792
Summary
Unfinished study of a woman seen from behind, turning her head back over her right shoulder to look at the viewer, with her right hand raised to her mouth. The paintwork is comprised of large, sweeping brushstrokes in light yellow and mid-brown ochre. There are some accidental paintmarks across the lower surface of the picture. The woman has long hair swept back from her face by a head band. The woman's dress has fallen off her shoulder exposing her upper arm and back, making this a somewhat seductive pose.
