Portrait after Reynolds of Lady Elizabeth Melbourne (c.1751-1818) and her son, Peniston Lamb. She is seated full-length, directed to left but facing to front, holding up her infant son who is on top of his cradle; he puts his arms around her neck; curtain above, landscape seen through window to left. Lady Melbourne (nee Milbanke) was a friend of the poet Lord Byron and a lover of George, Prince of Wales. She was a well known and very influential woman in Regency society.
