Summary
Sir Charles Saunders (1715-1775) was a Royal Navy officer. He served under Admiral George Anson and Admiral Edward Hawke. He was MP for Plymouth from 1750 to 1754 and then for the Yorkshire borough of Heydon from 1754 until his death. By 1759 he was Admiral himself and assisted James Wolfe in his victory over the French and the capture of Quebec. He was First Lord for a short time in 1756 and Knight of the Bath in 1761. He died in 1775 and was buried in Westminster Abbey near Wolfe's monument. Reynolds' portraits of military figures played an important role in the development of celebrities of war. They reference the most important events in British history - the major conflicts in Europe and America - which shaped the culture and society in which Reynolds worked.
