Princess Charlotte, only daughter of George IV and heir to the throne, died in childbirth in 1817. She was very popular and much mourned. Her monument at St George's Chapel, Windsor was paid for by subscriptions, limited to one shilling. Designed by Matthew Cotes Wyatt, youngest son of James Wyatt, architect of Heaton Hall, the tomb shows the princess full length, rising from the dead and floating up to heaven with angels, one bearing a baby. It was made between 1820 and 1824. This is one of two busts, the other at Brighton Pavillion, both replicas of the upper part of the figure on the tomb sculpture. One was exhibited in 1822 at the British Institution.
